TSMC Kicks Off Construction on Third Plant in North Phoenix

PHOENIX (AZFamily) On Tuesday, the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) made further progress in developing its facility in North Phoenix. They initiated construction on their third semiconductor fabrication plant, also known as a fab, located close to 43rd Avenue and Dove Valley Road.

TSMC mentioned that the third plant will generate approximately 6,000 job opportunities and will produce chips utilizing a 2-nanometer process or even finer technologies, with operations commencing by the close of this decade.

The significant event occurred during a visit from the U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick , commended TSMC for its pioneering efforts and expansion of their facilities. He mentioned that this initiative was a key component of the Trump administration’s strong dedication to bolstering what they termed as the "golden era of American manufacturing." "Today, we're here at TSMC Arizona to mark the resurgence of American manufacturing. Under President Trump's decisive guidance and visionary leadership, businesses and employment opportunities are being brought back into the nation faster than ever," stated Lutnick.

As the global leader in semiconductor production, TSMC manufactures chips for major corporations such as Apple, Intel, and Nvidia. "Artificial intelligence is transforming all layers of the tech ecosystem, with Nvidia's AI supercomputers serving as the backbone," stated Jensen Huang, Founder and CEO of Nvidia. He also expressed pride in producing their technology in Arizona, emphasizing how the government's backing of American manufacturing facilitates this shift towards domestic AI infrastructure development—a crucial step toward the upcoming industrial transformation.

The visit occurs almost two months later. TSMC declared its intention to invest an extra $100 billion. In the United States, this encompassed both newly established and pre-existing Valley locations. This addition came atop an over $65 billion commitment within the country, which featured three facilities in Arizona following substantial subsidy offers from the Biden administration.

TSMC stated that this investment is anticipated to generate 40,000 construction positions within the coming four years, numerous well-paid tech roles, and contribute more than $200 billion to various sectors throughout Arizona over the course of ten years.

In May 2020, TSMC Arizona initially disclosed their intention to pour resources into an extensive facility in Phoenix aimed at semiconductor production. Seven months after announcing these plans, around 1,130 acres of land were secured. Construction on the initial fabrication plant started in April 2021.

Former President Joe Biden toured the campus in December 2022 during TSMC’s celebration of incoming semiconductor production machinery for their facility in Arizona. At that time, the corporation also expressed its intention to build a second cutting-edge fabrication plant in the same state. In April 2024, they revealed plans for yet another fabrication site with advanced capabilities.

TSMC Arizona received up to $6.6 billion in incentives. from the CHIPS Act in December.
