Seeking Solutions: Moore Family Faces Ongoing Backyard Flooding as City Leaders Respond

Each time it showers, a lady from Moore mentions that it underscores a persistent flooding concern right outside her home. After six months of attempting to address the matter, she expresses that it seems the situation remains far from resolution.

Sierra Kuryk's yard is filled with mud and puddles. However, this pales in comparison to what she has witnessed recently.

It seems like a lake out here," Kuryk remarked. "I certainly become upset because I think it might have been preventable.

Six months ago, Kuryk relocated to her new house. Unfortunately, flooding issues created an unfavorable initial experience for her family.

Each time it pours, irrespective of how much rain falls, we receive huge volumes flowing out from this drain opening. This drain points directly towards our septic field and also affects our workshop building.

Since moving in, she has been discussing this issue with Moore’s city officials, yet she asserts that no strategy has been developed to tackle the matter.

The City of Moore gave Fox 25 the following statement:

The municipal employees recognize they've been communicating with Ms. Kuryk ever since she bought the land back in November 2024. They’ve assessed the drainage study along with the design specifics concerning the retention basin which drains onto her plot. Their independent drainage consultant confirmed three key points: first, every local ordinance has been adhered to; secondly, the channel from the stormwater holding area discharges exactly as it always had—no new pathways were created; finally, the volume of run-off reaching her lot remains consistent with pre-development levels before the establishment of Broadmoor Heights subdivision took place. Moreover, both department workers and their professional advisor conducted an inspection tour around the containment reservoir and outflow facility about two weeks past to identify potential enhancements aimed at addressing Ms. Kuryk’s worries. Owing to uncertainty over the precise positioning of sewage pipes extending outward from tanks beneath ground level, officials haven’t yet devised strategies meant to reduce impact. Nonetheless, following recent exchanges between them and Ms. Kuryk, team members continue exploring alternative adjustments at the drain exit point designed potentially to steer rainfall overflow toward an established ditch space within her premises.

Kuryk stated, "They should have purchased an easement for access to the road and installed the drainage directly into the city’s drainage system instead of dumping everything onto our land. They insist their infrastructure can manage it, but obviously, it cannot. I genuinely wish the city could acknowledge this mistake. It would be great if those responsible for causing the issue were willing to assist in resolving it. Now, my property functions like a makeshift reservoir and is entirely unusable."

Kuryk mentions that the city informed her they would examine this matter in her neighborhood on Friday morning.
