Petal's Restaurants and Bars Get Four-Year Extension on 3% Tax
Petal, Miss. (WDAM) - The summer festivities at Petal’s Russell Sportsplex will keep rolling as state authorities have extended the city's 3% tax on dining establishments, drinking spots, and accommodations.
“As more money flows in and customer numbers increase, Petal’s Mayor Tony Ducker commented.”
The tax was scheduled to end on July 5, 2025.
Ducker informs WDAM 7 that the tax generated roughly $1.4 million in revenue for 2024.
"We generate approximately $100,000 each month, which enables us to uphold our pledge to the recreational services division," stated Ducker.
Ducker mentioned that the funds have been utilized for drainage improvements at the softball fields, installing turf at the baseball fields, and naturally, the splash pad.
"There isn't a part of our budget that remains untouched by this," stated Ducker.
Teams are currently preparing the area for a new entry point to the sports complex from Central Avenue.
Ducker said leaders paid for the project using 3% tax money, as well as funds from the state.
“The paving part of it will take place later this fall if everything falls like we need it to,” said Ducker. “But, this phase shouldn’t take very long.”
Another project leaders are hoping to push forward is the long-awaited Matthew’s Branch walkway.
Ducker said they’ve acquired all the necessary land and are just waiting on right-of-way clearance from the Mississippi Department of Transportation.
We aim for people to witness how their tax money is being utilized," stated Ducker. "This includes taxes such as the 3%, property tax, and sales tax.
You ought to be able to see where your tax money is going."
The tax has been set to expire on July 1, 2029.
