West Virginia Lawmakers Gear Up for Emergency Session

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WOWK) — The West Virginia legislators concluded their legislative session just over two weeks back. Nonetheless, they still have plenty to do since at least one additional special session is expected soon.

It was a significantly reduced amount of legislation enacted this year," stated Senator Mike Oliverio (R-Monongalia). "To tell you the truth, we have plenty more work ahead.

However, among the legislation that was passed during this session, Senator Mike Oliverio highlights one specific bill.

Our university law enforcement personnel lacked a retirement fund, leading to frequent staff turnover," Oliverio stated. "During this legislative period, we enacted a measure establishing a pension scheme for campus police officers. This initiative should help recruit and keep more law enforcement members on campus, enhancing overall safety at educational institutions.

Improving the Public Employees Insurance Agency, known as PEIA, remains at the top of the unresolved issues.

It's an imperfect system, yet we manage within it as effectively as possible," stated the senator. "This isn't your conventional insurance firm; rather, it operates according to individual earnings and premium rates. Much of this might seem illogical from a standard insurance perspective, but somehow it functions. Our task now is to improve how it works and secure adequate funding.

Governor Patrick Morrisey has emphasized the significance of not just PEIA, but also the school funding formula, along with attracting additional job opportunities to West Virginia.

For West Virginia to achieve our ambitious goals, addressing workforce engagement is crucial," Morrisey stated. "We're forming an internal task force to explore methods of boosting employment rates. We've got numerous initiatives underway. I remain hopeful that enhancing this structure will pave the way for significant advancements in the Mountain State.
